Background

Fataldao Primary School in General Santos, Mindanao was built in 2019 and is home to 113 students. It’s particularly noteworthy as all of them come from the B’laan tribe, a community of indigenous peoples of Southern Mindanao. Students from ages six to twelve have to endure a six kilometer walk on a daily basis to get to the school, even having to cross a river which often leaves them drenched and needing to return back home. Despite the large student population, Fataldao only has two working classrooms, both of which were donated by HOPE. Due to the limited space available, classes are operated under a multi-grade system, wherein two grade levels use the same room, their lessons differentiated only by a blackboard. Kindergarten and Grade 1 students use a makeshift classroom while Grades 2 and 3 use the storage facility of the community.
