Background

Situated in the heart of Barangay Bales, Happy Valley Integrated School in Maasim, Sarangani was founded in 1959 and offers basic K-12 education from Kindergarten to Grade 10. Previously an exemplary neighborhood of peace and progress, Barangay Bales has fallen victim to persistent crime through the years. This, coupled with the lack of space and comfortability in the school’s facilities has resulted in a drop in enrolment numbers. Most of the classrooms in the school are substandard; three are dilapidated, one is makeshift, and another is improvised using the barangay hall. In 2018, HOPE, in partnership with VitaCoco, donated two classrooms, bringing the total number of working classrooms in the school to nine.

Impact Stories

The two new HOPE classrooms replaced two of the school’s makeshift classrooms. One, a councilroom borrowed from the barangay, is now used for Grade 9 students. The second classroom replaced the borrowed barangay hall and now accommodates Kindergarten students. “The students are very much happy and comfortable with our classrooms,” one representative said as they expressed their gratitude to HOPE.

The classrooms built here are historic; they were the first ecobrick classroom built by VitaCoco, where 1.3MT of plastic waste were upcycled into 6,250 ecobricks. For the academic year 2022-2023, an estimated 58 students will get to use the new classrooms.
