Background

Cabasaran Primary School in Lanao del Sur is a safe space amidst the Marawi siege that has taken the lives of dozens and destroyed countless homes. The entire student population, totaling to 200, is Muslim and the livelihood of the community is primarily trading.

Even prior to the siege, Cabasaran had no standard classrooms to accommodate its students. It was through the aid of UNICEF that they received three tents and transformed them into five makeshift classrooms. They practiced resourcefulness by using the outer walls of their principal’s house for two of the classrooms, and making do with blackboards to divide the sections. All five of the classrooms were made possible through HOPE’s program for education.
