Background

Polomolok Elementary School in Purok Mabuhay, South Cotabato has a student population of 454. It has ten working classrooms, two of which are makeshift, and another two were donated by HOPE, which now impacts 100 of the students. The classrooms were made possible through donors HOPE in a Star and SEDA Hotel. The journey towards the completion of the two classrooms was a long one, to say the least. It was first screened in 2018, but construction only started in 2020. There were delays in construction due to COVID-19 restrictions and it was only in January 2021 that the classrooms were finished. In 2022, the classrooms finally underwent a turnover ceremony as social distancing rules were eased–just in time for face-to-face classes in April.

Impact Stories

The two HOPE classrooms in Polomolok were the first of their kind in South Cotabato. The school was in urgent need of two new classrooms because the makeshift ones students were using at the time were no longer safe or conducive to learning. Sir Reden Fajagutana, Head Teacher at Polomolok Elementary School shares the difference that HOPE classrooms have had on their school community, “It brought happiness and excitement to the students and more support from the parents.” With the HOPE in a Star fundraising campaign, people had the chance to win once-in-a-lifetime experiences with celebrity volunteers, and at the same time give back to communities in need by lending a hand in building public school classrooms.
