Background

Basak Elementary School in Lanao del Sur was established in 2018 and all of its students subscribe to the Islamic faith. It has been the victim of the Marawi siege in 2017 when dozens of citizens were slain, hostages were taken, and homes were destroyed in the name of the Islamic State. Due to the armed conflict, the school felt it necessary to open its doors to other students from hard-hit areas. International aid also came in the form of three tents from UNICEF. The principal of Basak Elementary insisted on continuing the students’ schooling despite the siege, reasoning that the only way to prevent such a thing from happening again in the future is through education. It is through proper education, the principal says, that the cycle of child terrorists will be stopped.

The school has an impressive student population of 343 and seven functional classrooms, three of which were made possible by HOPE.
