Background

In the highlands of San Marcelino, Zambales, lies the United Nations Women Aeta School that shelters the bright Aeta minds of tomorrow. Situated in a geographically challenging location, the purely indigenous school remains underdeveloped; students, teachers and visitors are forced to brave the rocky terrain, streams and lahar that blocks their way to school grounds.

Doing their best to create a comfortable learning space, the school’s teachers conduct classes under nearby mango trees and in open nipa huts during the summer to ensure proper ventilation. It becomes even more challenging during the rainy season when rain water leaks through the rooves of the few makeshift classrooms the school has, which are made from coconut lumber and bamboo strips, and have unfinished base walls.

Impact Stories

Previously relying only on nearby trees and makeshift classrooms made of flimsy materials, the United Nations Women Aeta School community was left with worries of unpredictable weather, heat and other factors to pull their focus from learning. Now, two new HOPE classrooms will provide them with their first standard instructional classrooms, providing all 78 students and 5 teachers with a secure, well-ventilated area conducive to learning and their overall development.

With these new classrooms, the indigenous people of the school may wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to expanding their knowledge. Instead of the local mango trees, open nipa huts and makeshift buildings, HOPE stands alongside this community with sturdy classrooms that provide a safe place to sharpen their minds and further their futures.
