Background

Caught in the middle grounds of Dumanjug’s mountainous regions and urbanized areas, the Kabalaasnan Elementary School settles itself as the furthest school in the municipality between paved, passable roads and uneven terrain. The school provides guidance and education to a population of about 170 students ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 6 levels. On the way to school grounds, some students often find themselves faced with the challenge of searching for a way across rivers and other barrios in order to arrive at their destination. On unfortunate occasions, Kabalaasnan experiences multiple plights brought by heavy monsoon rains, soil erosion, and more. Due to previous weather conditions, some of the school’s classrooms deteriorated to the point of becoming hazardous and unfit for learning. Since then, Kabalaasnan has opted to conduct classes in a few makeshift classrooms alongside some of the broken-down classrooms that are still functional.

Despite numerous challenges that the school faces on a daily basis, Kabalaasnan Elementary School remains a pillar in the community for the nourishment of the bright young minds of Dumanjug, Cebu. Facing multiple calamities, the school grounds were significantly worn down, causing erosion and instability in the foundation the grounds were situated upon. Some of the school’s classrooms had also become condemned due to recent typhoons in the country. Classes are now conducted in a few of the school’s makeshift classrooms as well as some of the condemned classrooms that remain functional enough to be used. But with two new HOPE classrooms, the students and teachers of Kabalaasnan Elementary School can look forward to safer and more comfortable spaces of learning.
